Q. How long is the ABSOLUTE "Statement of Attainment" valid for?
A. 5 years. You can register today. Login or download the course material in 12 months time, then sit the exam 12 months after that.
Q. Are we approved by the QLD Building Services Authority, the NSW Office of Fair Trading and ACT Planning and Land Authority?
A. Yes. Not only are we a Registered Training Organisation (Providor No. 91521), we are listed as an approved provider on all 3 of the government departmental websites.
Q. Do I have to complete the assessment in one sitting?
A. No. You can complete each module one questions at a time. Your results are saved everytime you press the `save answers` button. You can login and logout as many times as you like over how ever long you need.
Q. Can I complete the course and sit the assessment from home?
A. YES. You can register, download and read the course material, and sit the assessment from any computer with an internet connection.
Q. How long does it take to complete the online course?
A. For 39219QLD Course in Preparation for Owner Builder Permit, the nominal duration is 24 hours. The assessment component will take around 2 hours.
Q. What is the pass mark for the assessment?
A. There is no pass mark. Students will be deemed competent in each assessment module that is being assessed in a holistic approach.
Q. How much does it all cost?
A. For course 39219QLD, the cost is $195;
Q. How many times can I sit the online assessment?
A. Unlimited. You can sit the assessment as many times as you like until you pass, although if you fail the course a number of times, you will be required to prove your competence to one of our trainers.
Q. Do I really need an owner builders licence/permit?
A. In NSW, If the value of work (labour and materials) exceeds $12,000, you must complete a NSW Office of Fair Trading approved course.

In QLD, If the value of work (labour and materials) exceeds $11,000, you must complete a QLD Building Services Authority approved course. If you can show that you have gained a technical building qualification you may be eligible for exemption by the QLD Building Services Authority.

In ACT, there is no monetary amount applicable for owner-builders but there are a range of exemptions which can be found in the following document. ACT owner-builder exemptions.

Q. What are the steps to becoming an owner builder?
A. Step-1: Register online.

Step-3: Sit the online assessment.
Q. How long does it take to receive my "Statement of Attainment" in the mail after I pass the online exam?
A. If you selected the express post option when registering, you can expect to receive your "Statement of Attainment" in less than 24 hours.

If you didn’t select the express post option when registering, your "Statement of Attainment" will reach you in 2-3 working days.

Q. How long do I have to sit the assessment after I register?
A. 5 years. There is no time limit as to when you have to sit the online exam. The login that you registered with, will be valid for 5 years.
Q. How many questions are there in the online assessment?
A. This varies on which course you sit. The questions are either made up of multiple choice questions or a combination of short answer and multiple choice questions. There are roughly 50-60 common sense multiple choice and short answer questions plus a few short spreadsheet-style grids to complete. Feel free to sit a practice assessment.
